Airport Pavement Testing

Applied Pavement Technology provides comprehensive testing services, including nondestructive and destructive structural and materials testing.

Equipment

We own and operate a Dynatest 8081 heavy-weight model falling weight deflectometer (FWD), which is a specialized pavement testing device that allows the rapid, accurate, and nondestructive characterization of the structural condition of all types of pavements. The equipment is able to simulate loadings ranging from small planes to the heaviest aircraft. FWD testing facilitates the structural evaluation of multiple test locations in a short period of time without disturbing the pavement structure and having minimal impact on aircraft operations. Some specific uses of the FWD include:

• Pavement layer characterization
• Load carrying capacity determination
• Maintenance and rehabilitation design selection
• Remaining structural life estimation
• Void detection
• Load transfer efficiency evaluation
• Built-in slab curling potential assessment
• Construction Quality Assurance/Quality Control
• Forensic investigation

Applied Pavement Technology also owns and operates a trailer-mounted material sampling device that can be used to obtain core and auger samples of the pavement and subsurface layers. The coring apparatus is applicable for both hot mix asphalt and portland cement concrete surfaced pavements.

Services

In addition to FWD testing and material sampling, Applied Pavement Technology, through our own equipment or by strategic partnering, provides a full-range of additional testing services, including:

• Dynamic cone penetrometer (DCP) testing
• Geotechnical exploration
• Materials testing
• Seismic-method testing
• Roughness measurement
• Ground penetrating radar (GPR) testing
• Friction testing

Through appropriate pavement testing, Applied Pavement Technology is able to accurately asses existing pavement conditions, allowing the customization of pavement designs.
