Over the past 13 years, APTech's experience with the National Highway Institute (NHI) has been unparalleled. APTech develops and provides training on a remarkably diverse set of pavement-related topics, including pavement design, pavement preservation, pavement management, hot-mix asphalt (HMA) pavement rehabilitation, portland cement concrete (PCC) pavement rehabilitation, maintenance management, construction inspection, preventive maintenance, pavement recycling, and HMA construction. From 2002 to 2013 APTech developed and updated the technical training materials for over fifteen courses in these technical areas, and through 2013 managed an instructional team capable of responding to scheduling requests and local customization. In 2014, APTech was again selected to deliver and develop courses for NHI. Currently, APTech delivers the Maintenance Leadership Academy (NHI 134063), Introduction to Transportation Asset Management (NHI 131106 and 131106A), Development of Transportation Asset Management Plans (NHI 131106B), and Principles and Practices of Enhanced Maintenance Management Systems (NHI 131112).
Since 2003, APTech staff have conducted and helped develop workshops and classes for the Airport Consultants Council (ACC), including Techniques for Airfield Pavement Maintenance, Repair, & Rehabilitation and Airport Pavement Design & Evaluation. The Techniques for Airfield Pavement Maintenance, Repair, and Rehabilitation course has been taught to various groups, including at the Airfield Operations Area Expo & Conference in Milwaukee.
The Airport Pavement Design and Evaluation Workshop has been held approximately twice a year in various locations across the United States, assisted by engineers from other firms as well as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Professionals who enroll in the Workshop and Techniques courses include airport engineers and designers, airport maintenance and operations staff, pavement design and repair consultants, construction and supervisory operations personnel, FAA staff, and airplane manufacturers.
In recent years, the pavement design class was expanded into Airport Pavement Design, Evaluation, and Analysis Workshop. The course was modified to reflect the changes to the FAA’s Advisory Circular 5320-6E and 5335-5B, as well as to provide hands-on experience with FAARFIELD, the FAA’s pavement design software and COMFAA, their Pavement Classification Number calculation software.
Together with the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE) and Delta Airports Consultants, Inc., APTech has provided the lead instructor for the Airport Pavement Maintenance and Evaluation Workshop hosted in Pittsburgh, PA and Portland, OR. This workshop provides information needed to establish an effective airport pavement management and maintenance program, helping attendees understand the performance of pavements, how to evaluate them, the characteristics of a good pavement management and maintenance program, and current repair techniques used in the industry.
The workshop also helps airport officials make informed decisions about the maintenance of their pavements and address special considerations such as minimizing impacts on users, maximizing airport safety, and adapting to their local operating environments. The format of the workshop provides a forum that allows attendees to network with industry colleagues about common pavement maintenance challenges and addresses issues appropriate to both general aviation and air carrier airports.
The Federal Airport Administration (FAA), Airport Engineering Division, AAS-100, is responsible for the development and delivery of two, 2-day airport maintenance and rehabilitation training workshops to airport maintenance personnel that work in the Caribbean Islands. To help with this task, APTech was selected to prepare and deliver presentations that focused on proper airport pavement maintenance and rehabilitation practices. APTech conducted these two training workshops in Guyana and Antigua.
