With winter in full swing, now is the perfect time to revisit an episode of the American Association of State Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Winter Weather Management’s ‘Talkin’ Winter Ops’ Podcast with APTech’s very own Jeremy Birkey and Greg Ducan, P.E., as they discuss the National Highway Institute (NHI) Maintenance Leadership Academy (MLA).

This comprehensive program takes maintenance professionals through 6 educational modules from pavement and bridge preservation, weather-related maintenance, and traffic services over a 10-day period. For these maintenance professionals, this is an opportunity to learn from industry experts and share knowledge with peers in a collaborative environment, with the goal of leaving the academy and putting this newfound knowledge into practice.
APTech’s Jeremy Birkey, course coordinator for the MLA, as well as Greg Duncan, who is a certified, three-time award-winning instructor with the NHI, sat down with Washington DOT’s Jim Weston and host Rick Nelson to talk shop. In the episode, they discuss the history of the MLA, from the first pilot program over a decade ago to its continued growth. They also talk about what is in store for its future, as APTech has recently been re-selected, once again, to deliver the MLA.
“I am a strong believer in the NHI MLA course. For the past ten years, I have had the privilege of teaching MLA modules, and it has become one of the most fulfilling aspects of my professional work. I value the opportunity to work closely with maintenance personnel and to see these leadership concepts translated into real-world practice across agencies,” said Greg. This isn’t the first time Greg has been featured on the ‘Talkin’ Winter Ops’ Podcast. His first guest appearance was back in a 2023 episode, ‘Potholes and other leftovers from winter storms.’
